The sun was shining with temps in the 20's, but still a bit cold standing outside at the Campbell Airstrip, the end for the teams in the ceremonial start of the Iditarod. From there they pack up and head north to Willow where the official race begins.
Amelia didn't refuse to wear her faux fur hat (what an Alaskan!). We all bundled up... including my sister who flew in the night before for Amelia's birthday! We checked out the Science Center at the Airstrip which was serving coffee, cookies and hot chocolate, waiting for the first mushers to arrive. Amelia sampled a few items and off we went to find a good spot. There was a crowd, but nothing like downtown Anchorage where the ceremonial start begins.
After a brief wait we hear from one of the officials ..."dogs coming!"
It really is a thrill to see them race along. During this start they have 2 sleds so they don't go too fast and an "Iditarider" who has won the high bid to sit in the sled for the event. It is a chance for the fans to wish the musher and his dogs a good luck.
We stayed for about 10 teams cheering on Martin Buser and Lance Mackay. People love Mackay and give him a warm welcome...even the babies. He says he is running a junior team, but today is in 5th place. You never know as it always comes down to the very end in double overtime! :)
Amelia walked about half the way. It's quite the trek into the viewing spot and the path is shared with cross country skiers. The old airstrip and surrounding woods are quite the nature lovers destination and a picturesque setting for the fans, unlike 5th avenue that is more of a street fair.

We usually head to Moose's Tooth for pizza and beer but we had to get ready for a BIRTHDAY PARTY the next day!
next ... the big 3 birthday bash!
