Saturday brought us down to Campbell Airstrip to watch the end of the Ceremonial start of Iditarod 2014.
Even though the temperature was almost 30, this is the coldest part of the Anchorage area and bundling up was still appropriate, although much better than in previous years.
Not a dog, but this guy greeted us while we put on our snow gear in the truck.
Waiting for the first team. She was getting a bit antsy.
Finally they arrive.
We got a bootie!!!
Teams throw dog booties to kids along the ceremonial trail that starts on a very crowded 4th avenue and heads thru Anchorage to the much calmer and serene Airstrip where the teams pack up and head for Willow and the official start the following day.
After a few teams passed, we headed to the Campbell Creek Science Center for some hot chocolate, cookies and a bit of Iditarod education.
I stayed back for a bit to get a few shots of some Iditarod champ hopefuls.
One being...#6 Mitch Seavey who won a few years ago and the father of Dallas who won last year. In the blood apparently.
#10 Ally Zirlke was runner up last year.
Maybe it's me, but rookie Tommy Jordbrudal's dogs look like a mean bunch of winners don't they? Especially the werewolf up front.
We headed back after the refresher at the science center and I managed a few more shots.
Then Amelia said it was time to go.
Will be watching the race at Iditarod.com and will be routing for our favs.
After getting back to the car and ditching the snow gear, we headed to pick up a birthday cake, balloons and sadly...a new fish for Miss Amelia who thought we were just picking up fish food for Ponyo/Dorothy/Ashling (names she had given her few days old fish) that bellied up Saturday morning. I said she was fine and scurried her along all morning until we left...hoping she wouldn't take a good look. Ponyo 2 is doing well and she never noticed :)
Finally, I did promise mermaid birthday party pics, but will wait til tomorrow to do that as Amelia still has a big day today...celebrating with Mom and Dad.
