I enrolled Amelia in dance at 18 months. A mommy and me class where she cried for the first few months unless I held her and danced her around. She now takes two dance classes and loves it. I, thankfully, watch from the waiting room.
She's been skating since she was three. She fell for the first week and then miraculously began to shuffle across the ice. She almost quit when a little boy in her class ran over her with a metal practice bar that was inadvertently left out and he was racing around with it. I told her it was not the right reason to quit. She sat out whenever he was there, but then was moved into a new class and loved it once again. She now takes a semi private class with one of her best buddies and loves it as much as dance. She doesn't remember the little boy :)
Finally, Amelia and I were glued to the Olympics and gymnastics in particular. She took a tumbling class in the summer, but wanted to do more. This Fall I enrolled her in gymnastics and she claims she loves it more than anything else.
I only agreed to the gymnastics as it was right before her ice skating lesson. Another day of activities, I felt would be too much. She is only 6. It has worked out great.
A ballet class on Wednesdays with a teacher I have known from Alaska Dance Theatre....
A Ballet/Jazz (and a bit of tumbling) class on Thursdays with her best buddies at the school where she began nearly 5 years ago.
Gymnastics Saturday morning ...
... and skating right after with one of her teachers in the group skating classes she began with.
She has gotten rather good at all three and is always eager to go. But in a year or so, she will have to choose what she wants to concentrate on, as my dance students did way back when. They will be mastering the techniques and getting better and better at the craft they choose. The question...which will she choose? Of course, I love dance...but I also love to watch her skate. And I am pretty confident that at this moment she would pick gymnastics over all the other. But only for this moment I think. Each gets more difficult and only with a passion do you excel. She will have to do the most in what she loves the most. We shall see...
For now, she is enjoying the rainbow.
