The Calm Before the Storm

update:  Certainly a sleepless night for Rob and I with Amelia sleeping right thru it.  Apparently, Anchorage got a good blast too.  http://www.adn.com/2012/09/05/2612953/high-winds-ravage-anchorage.html  We lost one tree in a bath of trees quite a ways from the house, but just another wind storm for us on the mountain.   Usually, Anchorage doesn't see these winds much.  This came from a storm up from the west Aleutians, where as many of our winds are Chinook winds that bring in the warm air that don't always effect Anchorage or Eagle River for that matter except if you are up high.  In fact, I can be at the bottom of our hill getting the mail in a breeze and drive up to gusts that would make the car door go the other way.  Anyways, we survived and Amelia woke up just after the power came on...she didn't even get to camp with us.  Until next time.

Expecting the first of the Fall storms today and tonight with gusts to 100mph.  We live on a mountain side and along with the beautiful view, we get some very gusty winds.  Neighbors say they have clocked winds at 130 mph.  They sure feel like that!  We hunker down in back of the house with anything over 80.  We get theses in Fall and Spring .

It's amazing that these winds back East wreck havoc, but here, although troublesome, don’t cause that much of a stir. Trees bend to where you think they will snap (we have lost some tops) and roof shingles cascade down thumpity thump.  Sigh.  I do remember the Labor Day storm in Syracuse more than 10 years ago and those 100 mph lasted 5 minutes.  These last hours. At least we don’t get thunderstorms! Anywho….

Here are our views on a nice day :)
The Chugach Mts to the Northeast
The Alaska Range to the Southeast

It rained most of the weekend, but we did manage a trip to the zoo and a few walks outside.

We also finished our stick house awhile back, painted our toenails to look like strawberries and did some playing with animal figurines that weren't horses...well they had to pretend they were horses.

Will be back after the storm for Chocolate Chip Granola Bars!
