One of my favorite places on Earth.
Amelia slept to 9 am and luckily Rob was home working...I asked "Want to adventure to Independence Mine???!" "No." and she meant it. "Andrea is going." in a bribe voice. "No, I want to stay home with dad and play legos." I was very happy with that, as she has been on the go for over a month and had just been to Independence during Grammy's visit. This means I can hike up too.
We waited for Ryan and Liz to get back from their morning hike up Baldy behind the house. They drove up to the base as I said we have walked up many times, but then not motivated to actually climb the rest. I added there are people who run from the bottom of our hill ... up to Baldy...then run up the mountain...carrying a bag of rocks on their back...talking on their cell phone.
Ok..that last bit is not true :)
Here are a few pics Ryan shared:

They pondered waking up Andrea to hike with them but didn't...which, we learned later on, was a good thing. :)
They came back rather sweaty and looking rather amazed that the hike was that strenuous. Why not another hike to Hatchers Pass and Independence Mine?!! Woo hoo.
Andrea was in good spirits. Let's hike up and visit our rock.
Come on Andrea...Amelia would have gone farther! Not looking very promising.
After photo shoot on the rock. I named it "our rock" as most of the guests have had their photo taken here and I have claimed it for my own :)
Let's go further. Stunning Andrea who thought we were going back down. "Uahhggk", the sound she makes from the back of her throat in disgust. Hahaha I am still doing that sound. In comparison, I would probably be carrying Amelia right now.
However, Amelia would have perked up when seeing these moss covered rocks that litter the landscape, as she would hope they would begin to roll and turn into trolls just like in Frozen.

She needs a drink and asked me to carry her. No. "Uahhggk".

There is actually a working mine high above where a decedent of the original miners still lives and has built a new house. I am sure Rob would love to live here.

Alright Andrea...I won't make you trek thru the snow in your keds .. we will wait here for Ryan and Liz.
The Protest Pic.

Let's head down...haven't seen Andrea move that fast during the whole trip. She is named "the sloth" for a reason.

We stopped for soup and a snack at the Hatcher's Pass Lodge. We had just visited here with Rob's mom less than a month ago and couldn't reach the mine due to snow. You can read about that here.

Time to head back with a stop at Fred Meyers to pick up Fresh Salmon for dinner. Rob makes the best grilled salmon! Yep forgot to take a pic of this dinner...but we got a double rainbow instead...right out our window :) Can't beat that.

Tomorrow...Alyeska for a ... hike. Andrea: "Uahhggk". I reminded Andrea that her plane ride back home is Tuesday..."Uahhggk". :)

A big disappointment was that the actual pass was closed, thus we would have to hike to Summit Lake from the road. You can usually drive pretty close as we did when Rob's Aunt Barb and Uncle Ron visited here last September.
We figured that we would do the short hike to Independence Mine and then decide what to do. Many of the buildings have collapsed, but are being restored slowly. Looks like an earthquake hit, but in reality...just winter and piles of snow.

Ryan appropriately sums it up.
In true Wierbinski spirit..why not pelt him with snow balls.

Pathetic. I am guessing we are not going to Summit Lake. :)
