We did a LOT with only 6 days. Donna arrived at midnight Thursday and Friday am we headed to the AK fair! I must admit that even though it is colder at the AK fair, I like it better than the NY Fair. Less crowds, smaller and MUCH better freebies! Remember we are an oil and gas state making freebies at the fair pretty sweet for those rich companies! It’s about a 1/4 of the size of NY’s Fair with little local shops to look at and unique foods. Of course, we got a hot dog as that is one of Amelia’s favorites. It warmed up and the sun came out toward the end making it even more enjoyable. Dinner at Shine’s Sushi (one of mine and Rob’s favorites) ended a long day at the fair.
The next day we headed to the Reindeer Farm. They had 2 rather big reindeer whose antlers were shedding and baring some sharp antlers and with several small kids and babies, I thought hmmm...that’s not so smart of them. If one kid gets hurt no sign in the world or disclaimer is going to help them. We had fun though! Amelia wasn’t very afraid and just kinda looked at them and fed the baby ones. The big guys all butted in and Donna had to fend them off :) We then headed to Wasilla (Sarah Palin fame) and the home of the Iditarod Headquarters. I regret not doing the dog sled ride...Donna didn’t care about it but how many times do you get to ride a dog sled?? Well on gravel...no snow. Next time we visit we are doing it! A great lunch at a hamburger joint and headed for home. On the way back Amelia fell asleep so I took her for a drive around a few neighborhoods and we rounded a turn and there was a black bear running across the road. No time to get the cameras out so you will just have to believe me :)
Next day was Anchorage. Shopping, strolling and having a lunch at the Captain Cook. Back home to a salmon dinner was just what was needed.
We packed up the car for an overnight in Homer the next day. A 5 hour drive that was not so nice as it was raining the entire way. We did miss the wind warning of 75 mile an hour winds on turnagain arm as we left early. I HATE WIND OF ALL KINDS! It was still windy (50 mph) and rain in Homer and was quite quiet at the Land’s End Resort on the Homer Spit. I love Homer...even in the rain. Amelia and I romped around the hotel (she loves hotels it seems) while Donna braved the elements outside taking a walk and picture taking. We drove to a local museum where Donna went in as Amelia again slept in the car. The next day was much better...cold but not much wind and no rain. ROCK HUNTING here we come! Amelia loves Rocks. She puts them in her pocket and searches for good ones. I have to check all her pockets when I do laundry and she insists on a coat with pockets when we are outside. Anyways...we picked up a few beauties, saw an eagle and saw seals at Kachemak Bay right out our hotel. Really it is a gorgeous spot. Next day we headed back again to rain, rain, rain. Cloudy in Anchorage and we had homemade pizza and went to bed early as Donna had to leave in the AM.
Amelia slept the whole night :) Tired.
